Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Relyper and link archiving.
Jarvis on the phone
Jarvis can call for you, answer calls, put callers through and send SMS – over your tenant’s line: a SIP trunk (sipgate trunking, easybell …) or a voice API account (Telnyx, Twilio, SignalWire). Setup and costs:
As of 4 October 2026. Net prices as published by the providers, without guarantee – they change. Please check with the provider before signing up.

Relyper started after an informatics faculty conference at a German Gymnasium where the question arose: "Should students be allowed to use AI in project work, and if yes, how do they cite it?"
The conclusion: Students may use AI, but must clearly attribute its contribution by providing the conversation context – either via exported chat logs or an immutable archived snapshot. Relyper was created to make that second option trivial and tamper‑proof.
Instead of pasting messy copied text blocks or unverifiable screenshots, a Relyper Snapshot provides a permanent, hashed, timestamped archive with a Perma ID that can be cited just like any other source.
Where does the name "Relyper" come from? It blends reliable and hyperlink — the idea is to turn ordinary links into reliable, citable references by creating archived, verifiable snapshots.
Academic & Project Use
Can I use AI (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) in school projects?
Yes - provided the use is transparent. Archive the relevant conversation turns to show what was generated versus what you authored yourself.
Why archive instead of screenshot?
Screenshots can be cropped, edited or lose context. A snapshot stores full structured content (HTML / text) with cryptographic integrity and a verifiable timestamp.
Do teachers really check the archive?
They can. Opening the Perma Link shows the preserved state. Over time this builds trust and discourages fabricated citations.
What if the AI system changes or deletes chats?
Your snapshot remains. Even if the original provider rotates models or purges logs, the archived version is fixed and independently stored.
How to Cite a Relyper Snapshot
The goal is clarity + reproducibility. Include the Perma ID, title/context, archived date, and optionally the Perma Link (/g/, no prefix) and the Reference Link (/r/ or readable /r//[/]). An additional "accessed" date isn't necessary for immutable snapshots.
Example (English):
"Conversation with GPT-4 answering project design prompts." Relyper Snapshot Perma ID: 6f3a92b1fe2c0000. Perma Link: https://relyper.de/g/6f3a92b1fe2c0000. Reference Link: https://relyper.de/r/wikipedia.de/fuchs/1. Archived 2025-11-18.
Annotation example (specific highlighted quote):
"Conversation with GPT-4 answering project design prompts." Relyper Snapshot Perma ID: 6f3a92b1fe2c0000. Perma Link: https://relyper.de/g/6f3a92b1fe2c0000. Reference Link: https://relyper.de/r/wikipedia.de/fuchs/1. Annotation: #3. Archived 2025-11-18.
Example (German):
"Wikipedia (DE): Fuchs – Versionsstand 2025-11-18." Relyper Snapshot Perma ID: 1d77ab094c2e0000. Perma Link: https://relyper.de/g/1d77ab094c2e0000. Reference Link: https://relyper.de/r/wikipedia.de/fuchs/1. Archiviert am 18.11.2025.
Annotationsbeispiel (konkretes markiertes Zitat):
"Wikipedia (DE): Fuchs – Versionsstand 2025-11-18." Relyper Snapshot Perma ID: 1d77ab094c2e0000. Perma Link: https://relyper.de/g/1d77ab094c2e0000. Reference Link: https://relyper.de/r/wikipedia.de/fuchs/1. Annotation: #3. Archiviert am 18.11.2025.- Perma ID: Immutable identifier representing the stored state.
- Archived date: When the snapshot was captured.
- Context title: Human-readable summary you assign (e.g., "Wikipedia (DE): Fox"), not the AI provider's marketing name.
- Perma Link: Use the format
/g/with the exact Perma ID shown (no prefix). - Reference Link: Short token
/r/or readable/r//[/]. - Annotations: If you highlight passages inside the snapshot, cite the annotation number (e.g.
#3) to point to the exact text.

Open Docs & DownloadsExport vs Snapshot
Traditional Export
- Manual copy / PDF / proprietary export format
- Harder to verify authenticity
- Can omit hidden context or system prompts
- Version drift if regenerated later
Relyper Snapshot
- Permanent hash (SHA-256) + timestamp
- Immutable layout & text content
- Single canonical Perma Link
- Optional privacy (private until cited)
How Relyper Differs from Perma.cc
Perma.cc is a preservation service operated by academic institutions for legally binding citations. Relyper follows a different philosophy and scope:
- Open to everyone — individuals, students, researchers, professionals.
- Future-proof and portable — all references can be exported at any time.
- Conditional open-source — the full source code will be released only if the platform ever needs to be discontinued, ensuring long-term independence for all users.
- Perma IDs — transparent, stable, instance-independent reference codes.
- Flexible visibility model — Public, Hidden, Private, Trash.
- Built for research, knowledge management, and personal archiving — not only for legal citation workflows.
- Snapshots with metadata and context, enabling richer documentation compared to simple frozen links.
Relyper is designed as a universal, future-proof reference archive — not limited to institutional networks.
Smart Links (short /s/ URLs)
Smart Links are short URLs like /s/abc123 that redirect to a reference or snapshot. They are meant for sharing and printing (QR codes).
Every plan supports Smart Links, but the number you can create is limited by your plan. Existing Smart Links keep working even if you hit the creation limit.
- Create: Go to the Smart Links page and generate a new
/s/…link for a reference. - Quotas: The Smart Links page shows how many you have left.
- Share: Use the Smart Link URL in slides, PDFs, or posters; it redirects reliably.
- Privacy: Smart Links point to the underlying item — visibility rules still apply.
Plan Related Questions
Can I change my plan later?
Yes. Up/Downgrade anytime; private creation locks only if above limits.
What happens if I cancel?
Public snapshots stay; private ones retained 90 days then purged (export before).
Student discounts?
Free plan generous; verified students get 50% off Supporter / Pro.
Payment methods?
Cards, SEPA, PayPal; Enterprise can invoice (NET 30).
Contracts?
Month-to-month; Enterprise may add custom terms.
Why not plain bookmarks?
Snapshots persist + verifiable; bookmarks break or silently change.
Future Roadmap Highlights
- Automated multi-turn AI chat capture (select messages & archive directly).
- Snapshot diff viewer to show how a page evolved across versions.
- Citation export bundles (BibTeX / CSL JSON).
- Educator dashboard for class-level verification and plagiarism context.
Personal Snapshots & Highlight Markers
When you capture a new snapshot via the dashboard or scan wizard, the HTML snapshot is stored as a personal snapshot tied to your account. Other users can still see the public reference, but your snapshot version and your highlight markers remain private unless you explicitly share a Perma Link.
- Per-user scope: New snapshots you create are stored with your user ID. Public Reference Links and the directory only see global snapshots; your personal versions are visible only when you are signed in.
- Perma ID + marker ID: A single Perma ID always refers to a preserved snapshot state. Inside that state you can maintain your own highlight markers (e.g., IDs 1, 2, 3 … for important passages) without creating a new Perma ID for every mark.
- Citation pattern: When you cite a passage, reference the snapshot Perma ID (for the preserved state) and, if needed, your internal marker ID (e.g., “Perma ID …, marker #2”) instead of generating separate Perma IDs for each highlight.
Browser Extension
What is the Relyper browser extension for?
It gives you quick browser access to Relyper: create a user-initiated snapshot of the current page and open your existing Relyper favorites in the popup or Chromium Side Panel.
Does it replace browser bookmarks?
No. It uses your existing Relyper favorites and folders as the source of truth. The extension can cache the latest response for speed, but it does not maintain a separate bookmark database.
Does it read every page automatically?
No. Snapshots are created only after an explicit click. The extension uses minimal permissions and does not capture page content just because you browse normally.
What is a Perma ID?
A Perma ID is a canonical, immutable identifier for a preserved state. It's short, stable, and verifiable. Use it in footnotes, captions, or reference lists like a DOI-like reference.
- Structure: Prefix + kind (e.g., RP:SN for Snapshot) + short-hash groups.
- Verification: We can re-derive integrity from the stored hash + timestamp.
- Portability: Even if the original URL dies, the Perma Link stays valid.
Public vs Private & Privacy Controls
Can I keep snapshots private?
Yes. Create private entries by default and make them public only when you are ready to cite them.
Can I switch back to private later?
You can hide a public entry, but previously shared or cited public Perma Links may persist in the record.
Do you scan for sensitive data?
We surface potential privacy flags to help you avoid accidental disclosure before publishing.
Can admins or staff see my private links and favorites?
By design, there is no special admin dashboard that lets staff browse your private entries. API requests are always scoped to your logged-in account. However, infrastructure operators with direct server or database access could technically inspect stored data. To mitigate this further, we are preparing an optional “encryption passphrase” feature similar to Chrome’s sync passphrase: selected data is encrypted in your browser, and the passphrase never leaves your device. Important trade-offs: we cannot reset or recover this passphrase for you, encrypted content cannot be searched or processed by AI features in the same way, and if you lose the passphrase the encrypted items are effectively unrecoverable.
What is the Guardian role?
“Guardians” are trusted humans who help with support, moderation and safety on Relyper. They can see additional diagnostic views (like scans overview, user & plan overview, and snapshot rules) to investigate issues, but their powers are deliberately limited compared to full admins.
Can a Guardian change my plan or billing?
No. Guardians can see which plan you are on and how close you are to limits, and they can contact you directly, but only admins can change plans, billing details or contracts.
Can a Guardian browse my private links and favorites?
Guardians cannot simply “browse everything”. They see the same product views that you would see in context (for example when you share a Reference Link or open a support case). There is no separate Guardian dashboard listing all private entries. As described above, infrastructure operators with direct server or database access are a different category and are covered by our privacy & compliance policies.
Why do some actions say “admin only” when I talk to a Guardian?
Certain actions – like changing plans, adjusting quotas or editing internal configuration – stay reserved for admins. Guardians can triage your request, gather technical details and message you, but they escalate configuration and billing changes to an admin when needed.
Security & RelyperAV
RelyperAV is our integrated website security scanner. It crawls pages, downloads linked files, checks them against ClamAV antivirus and queries threat intelligence providers like VirusTotal and PhishTank — all without leaving the Relyper platform. Try it now.
What does RelyperAV scan for?
RelyperAV crawls same-domain pages, extracts downloadable files (PDFs, archives, executables, etc.), scans them with ClamAV antivirus, and checks URLs across up to 6 threat intelligence providers including VirusTotal, PhishTank, AbuseIPDB, Google Web Risk, and URLhaus.
Do I need an account to use RelyperAV?
No. Anonymous users get 5 scans per day (3 pages each). Logged-in users get 50 scans per day with up to 20 pages per scan.
Is my data stored when I use RelyperAV?
Scan results are stored temporarily so you can review them. No personal browsing data is collected beyond the URL you submit and your IP for rate limiting.
Is a clean scan result a guarantee that a website is safe?
No. RelyperAV provides an automated best-effort analysis. No security scanner can offer 100% detection coverage. A clean result reduces risk but does not guarantee that a website is entirely free of malicious content. Always apply additional security measures and exercise caution. Relyper assumes no liability for damages arising from reliance on scan results.
Data Residency & Compliance
Relyper stores and processes data exclusively in German data centers. We design for GDPR compliance by default, keep auditability in mind, and provide organization features (Enterprise) like role-based access and retention policies.
Language & Translations
English is the canonical reference. On first visit we auto-detect your browser language; you can switch languages at any time via the language toggle. Translations are provided for convenience only—the English version is the binding legal reference.

What is the Relyper Neural Net?
The Relyper Neural Net (also called NeuroNet) is a real-time animated visualization of Relyper's internal processing pipelines. You can find it at net.relyper.de or /net — it is also embedded in the /status page.
Every active job on the platform is rendered as a node on an animated canvas. Particles flow between nodes to show data moving through the system in real time.
- URL scan pipeline — Basic scans, snapshot capture, AI metadata analysis
- AV (antivirus) pipeline — Malware and threat-scanning stages
- Snapshot queue — References waiting to be archived
- Support AI cluster (Aivra) — Live support chat activity and AI processing
Not machine learning. Despite the name, the Neural Net page has nothing to do with AI training or neural-network models. The name is a visual metaphor for the interconnected, node-based rendering style — think of it as a live heartbeat of the Relyper platform.
What does "Trash" mean in the directory?
The Trash area is our playful name for the off-topic archive: items that aren't a perfect match for the core search but still useful or interesting. "Trash" here is not judgmental – think of it like the friendly coffee corner.
Anecdote: In my day job, I created dedicated Trash channels for my teams in Microsoft Teams. That's where people freely exchange ideas – and it often becomes the place for our most important conversations, because ideas spark, links are shared, and problems get solved informally. That's our vibe for "Trash" on Relyper.
Who decides what counts as "Trash"? You do. We only make recommendations based on link signals (e.g., missing content, off-topic tags, weak quality). A reference can also be moved to Trash later — for example if the website is permanently down, the content clearly becomes irrelevant, or it is strongly down-rated.
- Include Trash: Mixes the off-topic archive into regular results.
- Trash only: Shows exclusively off-topic entries.
- You can switch back anytime – it's just an extra perspective.
